The Rise of a Multipolar World

December 26, 2025 | Farooq Ahmad Lone

With the relative decline of US global dominance, the resurgence of Russia and the rise of new centres of power like China, India, Japan, recently Turkiye etc. analysts and observers on global politics are of the opinion that the present moment in global politics is no longer unipolar but multipolar. New centres of power are emerging while some old powers are resurging. USA which had for decades since the end of cold war the status of "sole superpower on earth" is now believed to be a superior global power only. How will this impact global politics and nation states individually is a question of serious attention. Will USA's continental ally Europe emerge a separate power or remain in Anglo-American block, will Muslim states unite to develop a civilizational based Islamic power block, will China replace USA etc. are the questions which come in one's mind when one ponders over the topic.

While calling present era "the era of post American world" one has to keep in mind that the world has not entered this phase of global politics through US decline but through emergence of various national and civilizational based powers or blocks respectively. More poles of power are emerging making the world more multipolar and less unipolar. Nation states are vigorously pursuing their national interests sidelining superpower pressure in most of the situations. There is talk of independent foreign policy by almost every Asian and African nation who have been historically dominated either by the West or recently by Washington. There have been efforts by nations of the global south to form a single platform finding solutions of the problems of Global South. These nations are coming together on various occasions to develop their nations in their own ways and styles. Strong economies like Russia, China etc. are making efforts towards de-dollarisation. Though Washington is a strong economic power with global influence however it no longer has that mighty power of economic sanctions which were once crippling sanctioned economies. Today even weak economic powers are taking US economic sanctions less serious.
If the current geopolitical scenario is taken into account in Middle East, South Asia and Indo-Pacific, analysts are of the opinion that US is facing various challenges to maintain its dominating strategy. New regional powers are emerging in middle east, China is emerging as Asia's hegemon and the US pivot towards Indo-Pacific is not effectively countering China in the territorial waters. These geopolitical realities signify US geopolitical recession.
Ideologically US is also standing on a weaker edge as its promises to bring democracy and human rights to the nation's where it's military intervened turned to be empty promises. It is losing public opinion due to it's long history of foreign wars and support to racist regimes. Experts are pointing towards moral and ideological decay of US due to it's double standards and foreign wars for gold and oil.
There is also a famous paradox which beautifully catches the US as " There is a paradox between the magnitude of American power and Washington's inability to use that power to always get what it wants in international politics. Hegemony is not omnipotence".
