The Rise of a Self-Reliant Kashmir

The focus has shifted from conflict and uncertainty to entrepreneurship, education, and economic progress, fuelled by government initiatives, digital connectivity, and changing aspirations

Youth is the backbone of every society. It is a driving force, possessing sharp intellect and nuanced ways of perceiving life and the world around them. As people age, making rational and thoughtful decisions becomes more challenging, and that’s where the youth step in. Human brains are naturally inclined toward familiarity, making new ideas feel alien and difficult to accept, even when they have potential benefits. This is why every thriving society relies on its youth to make better choices. History shows that revolutions led by the youth have often resulted in positive change. In this sense, youth can be seen as a powerful weapon—when guided correctly, it can bring about lasting and meaningful impact. In the specific context of the Kashmir Valley—long embroiled in conflict, turmoil, and political agendas—the past decade has witnessed a drastic shift in youth perspectives under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Over the past decade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has implemented a series of initiatives aimed at transforming the mindset of Kashmiri youth, steering them toward development, empowerment, and integration with the broader Indian narrative. One of the most significant ways this transformation has occurred is by promoting the idea of self-reliance and entrepreneurship. Unemployment has long been a major issue among the youth, with the number of job seekers far exceeding available opportunities. However, a remarkable shift has taken place over the past decade—Kashmiri youth are increasingly gravitating toward entrepreneurship. Rather than relying solely on government jobs or traditional career paths, they are now exploring self-employment, innovation, and business ventures.
Several factors have contributed to this transformation under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. The government has introduced multiple schemes to support young entrepreneurs in Kashmir, including:
Startup India :– Encourages youth to establish and expand their own businesses by providing financial and technical support.
Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) :– Offers collateral-free loans to small businesses, enabling young Kashmiris to launch ventures without the burden of heavy investments.
Start-Up India Scheme :– Has specifically benefited individuals from marginalized backgrounds, including women and minorities, by helping them start their own businesses.
In recent years—driven by globalization and improved internet coverage—Kashmiri youth have increasingly leveraged technology and social media to promote their products and services. With enhanced connectivity and the rise of digital platforms, they have embraced online businesses, transforming the local economic landscape. Local brands are now selling their products through platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Instagram stores, making Kashmiri handicrafts, saffron, and dry fruits accessible to a global audience. Young entrepreneurs are launching tech startups, marketing agencies, and online educational platforms, overcoming barriers that once restricted business opportunities. Government-backed programs have provided e-commerce training and digital literacy to aspiring business owners, further fuelling this transformation. This digital shift has empowered young people to earn independently, contribute to Kashmir’s economy, and reduce reliance on conventional employment.
Modi has taken the idea of self-reliance even further into the field of agriculture, encouraging young Kashmiris to move beyond the traditional pursuit of government jobs and explore agriculture-based businesses such as organic farming and food processing. Initiatives like PM-KISAN (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi) provide direct income support to farmers, enabling them to reinvest in their land and businesses. The National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) promotes sustainable and organic farming practices, ensuring long-term profitability. Additionally, programs like the Integrated Development of Horticulture and HADP focus on improving yields and market prices for Kashmiri apples, saffron, walnuts, and almonds. The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund has also played a crucial role in providing financial support for building cold storage units, processing centers, and marketing facilities. The emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) has inspired young minds to see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.
Women, one of the most marginalized sections of society, have never felt more empowered and independent than they do today. In Kashmir, female entrepreneurs are emerging in large numbers, establishing businesses in fashion, beauty, food, and online services. Government-backed self-help groups (SHGs) and financial assistance programs have played a pivotal role in encouraging this trend. Several initiatives have been introduced to support women entrepreneurs, including the Stand-Up India Scheme, which provides financial assistance for starting businesses, and the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), which supports self-help groups run by women, enabling them to launch small ventures. The Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) offers interest-free loans and business training, further empowering women-led enterprises. Additionally, the Mudra Yojana scheme provides micro-loans without collateral, allowing women to establish businesses in farming, handicrafts, and retail.Over the past 5 years, Kashmir has undergone a profound transformation, particularly in the mindset of its youth. While the region has faced significant challenges, a new generation is now embracing growth, peace, and fresh opportunities like never before. The focus has shifted from conflict and uncertainty to entrepreneurship, education, and economic progress, fuelled by government initiatives, digital connectivity, and changing aspirations. This shift marks the dawn of a new chapter—one where young Kashmiris are taking charge of their future with optimism and ambition. The Modi government’s policies, coupled with the aspirations of Kashmiri youth, have led to a remarkable shift from dependency to entrepreneurship. Young people in the valley now view business as a viable career path, leveraging technology, investment opportunities, and government support to build a self-sustaining future. This entrepreneurial revolution has the potential to transform Kashmir’s economy and integrate it into India’s growing startup ecosystem.
