The Indian Army consistently assumes a prominent role in addressing a wide array of situations. Through its pro-people, people-oriented, and people-friendly approach, the Army has managed to capture the hearts of the Kashmiri people. Alongside implementing diverse programs and schemes while fostering a peaceful environment, the army takes the lead during both natural and manmade crises.

Whether responding to floods in Kashmir, earthquakes, or instances of violence, the army remains at the forefront of handling various situations. Historically, the lion's share of credit should be attributed to the Indian Army for its role in reinstating normalcy and peace in Kashmir. Starting from the events of 1947 when Pakhtoons (Raiders) invaded Kashmir, up until the present day, the army has consistently made sacrificial efforts to safeguard Kashmir from the grip of terrorism, violence, and turmoil.
The Indian army has undertaken numerous challenges to ensure the safety and security of ordinary citizens, often at the cost of their own lives. Recently, the army undertook formidable efforts to ensure the success of the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. The entire journey to the Amarnath Yatra is known for its arduous and demanding nature, especially along the National Highway, which poses challenges for security forces, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
In collaboration with the civil administration, the army not only ensures the safety and security of the pilgrims but also extends assistance in terms of shelter and food. They provide guidance, lend a helping hand to carry pilgrims, and offer support to elderly pilgrims. These concerted efforts by the army contributed significantly to the successful completion of the Amarnath Yatra.
The Army extends assistance to Yatris during challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions. The journey entails traversing difficult mountainous routes that are prone to landslides, avalanches, and unfavourable weather, all of which can impede transportation and jeopardize the safety and security of the pilgrims. The Army's involvement goes beyond physical support; they also play a crucial role in preventing and mitigating security threats from terrorists.
In the past, there have been incidents related to militants that have posed threats to the pilgrimage. The Army has stepped up to address this challenge and has worked diligently to ensure full-proof security measures. Through their efforts, they have managed to enhance the overall security of the pilgrimage and create a safer environment for the Yatris.
The Army plays a pivotal role in the management of the Amarnath Yatra. This pilgrimage has attracted over 4.28 lakh pilgrims so far, surpassing the previous year's attendance, as reported by TOI. The Army's contribution is essential in handling the significant influx of pilgrims and vehicles along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Given the large crowds and extensive rush during the Yatra, special attention and a considerable workforce are required. The Army's involvement goes beyond patrolling the roads; they actively work to ensure convenience for both the general public and the daily commuters. Their responsibilities encompass maintaining the smooth flow of pilgrims, preventing stampedes, managing queues, and upholding order.
The Army's efforts are integral to creating a secure and organized environment for the Yatra, allowing pilgrims to undertake their journey with a sense of safety and comfort.
The Army remains consistently vigilant for any potential medical emergencies during the Yatra. They ensure the presence of first aid supplies and doctors on-site, offering comprehensive facilities to pilgrims throughout their journey. The Army has established emergency control rooms and medical facilities to address any exigencies that may arise.
Given the physically demanding nature of the Amarnath Yatra, pilgrims are subjected to high altitudes and extreme weather conditions. The provision of medical care, emergency services, and the coordination of evacuations in the event of accidents or health crises can be particularly challenging, especially in remote and difficult-to-reach areas.
The Army's proactive measures in maintaining medical support and emergency services underscore their commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of the pilgrims throughout the Yatra
Addressing such a monumental challenge necessitates comprehensive planning, considering the care required for the hundreds of thousands of people involved. Effective coordination and cooperation among various agencies, including the police, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, and local administration, are imperative. The Army's highly skilled "Chinar Warriors," experts in "Avalanche and Mountain Rescue," have played a crucial role in securing the Yatra routes.
Collaborating closely with the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, their combined efforts are focused on ensuring a peaceful and seamless Amarnath Yatra in 2023, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the Yatris.
In addition, the Army has introduced a robust Digital Wireless Grid operating at an elevation of 15,000 feet to guarantee seamless communication throughout the Yatra. In a bid to augment contingency planning, a new Helipad adjacent to the Holy Cave has been constructed to expedite responses and evacuations during emergencies. The Army's unwavering dedication to infrastructure upkeep and enhancement is vividly demonstrated by their deployment of specialized engineering earth-moving equipment via the Chinook Helicopter at Panjtarni, situated at an altitude of 11,500 feet.
The Army maintains vigilant oversight of the situation, ensuring that all necessary emergency services and equipment are promptly accessible to manage any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during the Amarnath Yatra. Through their resolute efforts, the Army continues to occupy a pivotal role in guaranteeing a secure and tranquil pilgrimage experience for all Yatris.
