The Silent Battle Within our Offices

June 20, 2026 | Hilal Farooq

Not every battle is fought on a battlefield. Some are fought in silence, within the walls of our offices, where honesty struggles against selfishness, dedication confronts indifference, and integrity is often tested by those who should have stood beside it.

In every government institution, there are individuals who consider public service a sacred trust. They work quietly, without seeking appreciation or recognition. They understand that every file represents someone's hope, every signature may change a family's future, and every decision carries the weight of public confidence. Their greatest reward is the satisfaction of serving with honesty and dignity.
They may never be the loudest voices in the room but they are often the strongest pillars of the institution. Their commitment reminds us that true public service is measured not by visibility or influence but by consistency, accountability and an unwavering sense of duty.
Sadly, there is another reality that cannot be ignored.
There are those who neither perform their own responsibilities nor allow others to perform theirs. Instead of contributing to progress, they create hurdles, instead of appreciating sincere efforts, they attempt to discourage them. Personal interests overshadow institutional values and the success of a colleague is viewed not as an achievement but as a threat.
Jealousy, insecurity and the desire for personal advantage can quietly erode the spirit of an organisation. When energy is spent on creating obstacles instead of solving problems, it is not an individual who suffers alone but the entire institution loses its strength and public trust begins to weaken.
A workplace begins to decline not because it lacks capable people, but because negativity is allowed to overpower sincerity. When hardworking individuals are criticised instead of encouraged, when honesty is treated as a weakness rather than a strength and when self-interest replaces public interest, it is ultimately the common citizen who pays the price.
An office flourishes where ideas are shared freely, good work is appreciated sincerely and success is celebrated collectively. Progress is never achieved by pulling one another down, it is achieved by lifting one another up and working towards a common purpose.
Yet, truth possesses a remarkable strength, it does not require noise to prove its existence. Integrity may be delayed, challenged, or isolated, but it can never truly be defeated. Those who remain faithful to their principles may not always receive immediate recognition but they earn something far greater: self-respect, public trust and the blessings that come from fulfilling one's duty with a clear conscience.
Every honest effort leaves a mark, even if it is not immediately recognised. Time has a way of revealing the difference between those who merely occupied positions and those who truly honoured the responsibilities entrusted to them.
Government service is not merely employment; it is a responsibility towards society. The chair we occupy today belonged to someone yesterday and will belong to someone else tomorrow. Authority fades, designations change, and power is temporary, what remains is our character, our conduct and the difference we made in the lives of others.
The true strength of an institution lies not in its buildings, rules or hierarchy but in the integrity of the people who serve within it. A single honest individual can inspire many whereas just a single act of injustice can discourage countless others.
Let us never become the reason an honest person loses motivation, instead, let us become the reason integrity survives. Encourage those who work sincerely, Stand beside those who choose the difficult path of honesty, build an environment where dedication is respected rather than resented.
Let us remember that every action however small contributes to the culture of our workplace. We can choose to spread distrust or confidence, resentment or encouragement, obstacles or opportunities. That choice defines not only our institutions but also our legacy, because, in the end the greatest achievement is not how much influence we possessed but how faithfully we discharged the trust placed in us.
A system is transformed not by a few powerful people but by many honest ones who refuse to compromise their principles. The future of public service depends not on those who seek authority but on those who honour responsibility.
