The world has not yet seen any system that can honour and value women the way Islam has. Human history is full of evidence that before Islam, women were considered inferior to men and were deprived of their basic rights. If a daughter was born, it was considered a matter of shame. If women were kept alive, they were treated worse than slaves. Islam is the first system that showed women the correct path, gave them rights, and taught that a woman is the coolness of a man’s eyes and a blessing for him. Islam considers a woman’s happiness and comfort to be the responsibility of a man. Islam teaches that a woman should be respected and cared for in every situation.
Islam sets certain conditions for a woman’s honour and dignity, which guarantee her protection. Women enjoy a high position in Islamic law. When Islam appeared, the condition of women in society was extremely miserable. Women had no say in matters, nor were they trusted with anything. If a child was born to a woman, the father considered it his own right to decide whatever he wished. In case of divorce, the woman would be left helpless. Mothers were compelled to raise children all alone. A mother worked in homes and fields, but even her labour was not acknowledged. Women were deprived of inheritance, and their lives were spent in hardship and humiliation. In some countries, the status of women was even worse.
When Islam came, it removed all unjust customs and gave women honour. Islam protected the rights of women in society, within the family, and even as mothers. Women were given inheritance rights. Before Islam, women were treated like commodities, but Islam liberated them from all forms of cruelty. Islam gave women a unique status. It raised the importance of women, encouraged kindness towards them, and instructed men to treat them with good manners. Islam taught the world that a woman is a respectable individual, deserving of dignity and honour.
Islam expressed such respect for women that no other system in history had ever done before. Islam has established such a beautiful and successful system that it has given women equal rights in every relationship of life. This is the result of a revolution so powerful that its echo is still heard today. The revolutionary message brought by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) elevated the status of women and restored their honour in society. Humanity had never witnessed a revolution as great and humane as this. The Prophet (ﷺ) was the first and last personality in the world who raised the status of women to such a level and fought for their rights. Islam has always emphasised respecting women and acknowledging their rights.
“Al-jannatu tahta aqdamil ummahat”
Meaning: Paradise lies under the feet of mothers.
Islamic teachings have given mothers such high honour that even the greatest rulers bow their heads before them. Islam has taken the woman from being a helpless slave and made her the queen of the household. It has awakened such awareness in her that now she can protect her rights and live with dignity. Religion saves human beings from difficulties and leads them to respect and self-worth.
Islam’s objective is to free women from oppression and grant them the elevated position they deserve — a status that cannot be found in any other system of the world.
