The True Spirit of Charit

April 30, 2025 | Bareena Ashraf

One of the greatest acts of kindness is helping someone, especially during their time of need. However, in today's world, acts of charity are often performed more for public recognition than for genuine compassion.

True satisfaction lies not in impressing people but in pleasing God. Sadly, many individuals, after helping others, immediately post about it on social media, seeking attention—even if their intentions were initially pure. Sometimes, even if they don't share it themselves, the media or others make their deeds public.
But if someone truly wishes to give in secret, it is entirely possible to do so. Genuine charity does not seek an audience. In fact, publicizing acts of charity can unintentionally offend the dignity of those being helped. I have often seen people taking photos while distributing essentials to the needy and posting them online. While they may not mean any harm, it can reduce the nobility of the act and hurt those they are trying to serve.
Charity is among the most noble deeds a person can perform. It reflects the deep bond of humanity—our compassion, sympathy, and responsibility toward one another. Charity is not just about giving money or material support; it is about the intention behind the giving. In every religion and belief system, sincere charity is highly valued, and a person's deeds are judged by the purity of their intentions.
Our greatness is not defined by what we possess, but by what we are willing to give. As the saying goes, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Charity never diminishes our wealth; instead, it enriches our souls.
It is important for people to understand that the highest form of charity is that which is given quietly and privately. Good deeds done in public are commendable, but those done in secret are even more rewarding. When you give in secrecy, you not only earn the prayers of the people you help, but you also earn the pleasure of God.
Let us strive to serve humanity silently, with pure hearts and without seeking applause.
