“Love is a boon for mankind that dissolves the most eye-itching colors to the candid ones”.
These are the opening lines of the book,”The Wolf & The Moon” authored by Saima Jammal. She defines her book as pulchritudinous portrayal of the base emotions and hues that inaugurate love and longing as a whole. The book is divided into four chapters. Chapter one titled “love” consists of tweny-four poems. The beauty of the poems lie in their titles which are Brunette portrait, certitude, Estuary, Black love, Boundless, Valuing the complaints, Love predator, Black Longing, The love quest, Wrestle with time, Illusionary Faith, Polarity Outward, An Unposed Sketch, Lovable Precious, Echoing Beats, An Eerie Woman, She, He, Give up Greed, Beguile Swain, A Bizarre Pain, Love in Trance, Love Art and Longing and death. All these poems revolve around the central idea of love and longing. The poetess requests the readers to slacken the mental chains and focus on love which can be parental love, Heavenly love or rom a passionate lover. “If venomous words cost your heart and mind, love at least costs nothing”, she writes. Out of all the twenty four poems in Chapter one, I enjoyed reading Certitude the most. My favorite lines from the poem are,
A single horrible night,
In your presence, is much entitled than,
Countless festive nights,
In your absence
Chapter Second of the book is titled “Romance” and consists of seventeen poems. The titles of the poems are Alpha Wolf, Toxic, Dyptique Cannelle, Polished Perception, Romantique, Priapic Zealot, Being Too Covert, Hugs & Kisses, Coarse, An Expedition, Nest of Two, Art of Romance, Nostalgia; Beauty is Loyalty, Honor the Destiny, Howling Romance, and A Celebrated Romance. The poetess has boldly written about lust and romance in this chapter, she does not mind calling a spade a spade because she feels that these are just linguistic connotations of the world that the world manipulates. “Lust plagues, romance sustains”, she writes. I would like to congratulate the poetess for fearlessly writing about this theme whereas most of the established writers still shy away from touching this topic. I enjoyed reading “coarse” the most. These lines I found truly beautiful:
Fighting it raucous,
I learnt,
I am for it,
Until not lethal,
It is never love.
Chapter three revolves around Happiness. According to poetess, happiness is greatly contingent on self-awareness and self-development, though love can be a booster. My favourite poem from this chapter is “Inspiring Phoenix”. It goes like:
Although caged,
But not broken
Somebody Knock the fool’s door,
That learnt well,now;
To bun to ashes
And to rise from the same ashes.
Holding the phoenix,
As an ultimate nspiration.
Chapter four revolves around separation, it consists of twenty-one poems and each talks about separation in a different way. The poetess wants people to welcome separation as it is the part of growing. “If you burn, you are ashen, but if you rise, you are phoenix”, she writes. The last chapter is dedicated to pain. The poetess describes pain as a path of polished cobble stones to one’s destiny. She has done a tremendously good job in capturing all her emotion in a single book although we can spare her for including some cliché topics. The book published by Freshcode Books, has done a good job designing cover although editing could have been better. In a nutshell, this book comes as a new wave of breeze to poetry lovers and the emotions are very deep and rare at the same time.
