According to MeT official, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rain, snow and thundershowers are expected to continue across Jammu and Kashmir over the subsequent two days as well.
“The weather conditions on December 30 are expected to remain generally cloudy, with light rain or snowfall likely at many places towards late afternoon or evening. From Dec 31 to the morning or forenoon of January 1, the weather will remain generally cloudy with the possibility of light to moderate rain or snowfall at most places, while a few higher and extreme higher reaches of north and central Kashmir may receive moderate to heavy snowfall,” the official said.
There is a possibility that plains including Srinagar city may also receive the first snowfall of the season in the next three days.
Authorities have warned of possible disruption of surface transport in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir due to isolated spells of heavy snowfall.
The Meteorological Department has advised people, especially those travelling to higher reaches, to remain cautious in view of the expected snowfall and changing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, tourists are thronging to the ski resort of Gulmarg, which is covered in white blanket of snow after the recent snowfall.
The tourists are enjoying the snowfall and the gondola rides.
All the hotels in the Gulmarg are fully booked for New Year as the tourists want to make their new year experience a wonderful and life time experience.
The night temperatures across the region have remained above normal with minimum temperatures staying 4–5°C higher than average at many places in Kashmir.
Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir at minus 1.6°C.
In Srinagar night temperature settled at 1.0°C, Qazigund 1.4°C, Pahalgam minus 1.2°C, Kupwara 2.0°C and Kokernag 1.8°C.
The Valley is currently going through ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, a 40-day period of extreme cold.
