Budgam, July 29: Residents, tourism stakeholders and visitors have urged the administration to reopen the tourist destinations of Yusmarg and Doodhpathri, which remain inaccessible due to restrictions, saying the prolonged closure has affected local livelihoods and tourism activities.

The picturesque destinations in Budgam district, known for their meadows, forests and scenic landscapes, attract thousands of tourists every year. However, local people associated with tourism, including pony operators, transporters, shopkeepers and guides, said the restrictions have caused significant economic losses.
Residents said the tourism sector is a major source of income for hundreds of families in and around these areas. They appealed to the authorities to take necessary safety measures and allow tourists to visit the destinations again while ensuring proper regulation and monitoring.
“Tourism is the backbone of our livelihood. The closure of these places has directly impacted local businesses and daily wage earners who depend on tourist activity,” locals said.
Tourism players also expressed concern over the loss of opportunities during the peak tourist season, stating that visitors are eager to explore Kashmir’s lesser-known destinations. They said reopening Yusmarg and Doodhpathri would help diversify tourist footfall and provide economic relief to local communities.
Stakeholders urged the administration to assess the ground situation and take an early decision in the larger interest of tourism promotion and public welfare.
They also suggested strengthening infrastructure, security arrangements, waste management and visitor facilities to ensure a safe and sustainable tourism experience.
Locals maintained that with proper planning and coordination among concerned departments, both destinations can once again emerge as major attractions for domestic and international tourists while supporting the economy of the surrounding areas.
