June 18, 2026 | BK News Service

Ganderbal, June 17: Transport Commissioner Vishesh Mahajan on Tuesday visited Sonamarg and Baltal to review transport arrangements and preparedness for the smooth conduct of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026.

Accompanied by RTO Kashmir Qazi Irfan, ARTO Ganderbal Anis Ahmed and other officials, the Transport Commissioner chaired a meeting with officers of the Transport Department, Traffic Police, transport operators and other stakeholder agencies to assess readiness and ensure seamless transportation facilities for pilgrims.
During the meeting, Mahajan stressed that only roadworthy and properly certified vehicles should be deployed for Yatra duties. He directed officials to complete timely inspections and fitness checks of all vehicles proposed for the pilgrimage. He also emphasized that drivers engaged for the Yatra must possess valid credentials, adequate driving skills and thorough knowledge of the route, traffic regulations and safety protocols.
Taking serious note of complaints regarding overcharging, the Transport Commissioner directed transport operators to strictly adhere to the notified fare structure and warned that violations would invite strict legal action.
He also reviewed vehicle availability and instructed operators to maintain adequate fleets, including reserve capacity, to meet any surge in pilgrim traffic during the Yatra period.
As part of the visit, Mahajan inspected the Motor Vehicles Department Enforcement Post at Sonamarg and reviewed enforcement and facilitation measures. He directed field officers to maintain strict vigilance and ensure compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements.
Parking management arrangements were also reviewed. Directions were issued for earmarking sufficient parking spaces in coordination with the Traffic Police and other agencies. The Commissioner emphasized effective use of the proposed technology-based parking management system and dedicated mobile application for monitoring and allocation of parking slots to reduce congestion.
Reiterating that pilgrim safety and convenience remain the top priority, Mahajan called for close coordination among all departments to ensure reliable transport services, efficient traffic management and prompt assistance throughout the Yatra. He urged officers to adopt a proactive approach in addressing issues on the ground to facilitate a safe, comfortable and hassle-free pilgrimage experience.
Senior officers of the Transport Department and representatives of stakeholder agencies attended the meeting and accompanied the Transport Commissioner during the visit.
