Srinagar, Aug 9: Police have arrested two alleged drug peddlers in separate cases in Shopian and Pulwama districts and recovered contraband from their possession, officials said on Sunday.

In Shopian, police intercepted a suspicious person at a naka point near Manihal Crossing during a checking operation. A search led to the recovery of 44 grams of charas (hashish), following which the suspect was taken into custody.
The accused was identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, a resident of Anantnag district.
Police said the arrest was made as part of intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking and the movement of narcotic substances in the Valley. The recovery of the contraband has prompted further investigation to establish the source of the substance and identify any possible links in its supply network.
In a separate case in Pulwama district, police also apprehended another suspected drug peddler and recovered contraband from his possession. Further details regarding the identity of the accused and the quantity of the recovered substance were awaited.
Officials said cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the law and investigations are underway.
The arrests form part of the ongoing anti-narcotics drive across Jammu and Kashmir, with police intensifying checking, surveillance and enforcement operations against individuals allegedly involved in the possession, transportation and distribution of illegal drugs.
Authorities have repeatedly stressed the need to dismantle local drug networks and prevent narcotics from reaching vulnerable sections of society, particularly young people.
Police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and share information about suspected drug-related activities with law-enforcement agencies, saying community cooperation is essential to tackling the growing challenge of substance abuse.
The latest recoveries underline the continued focus of security and police agencies on disrupting the narcotics supply chain in south Kashmir and bringing those involved in drug trafficking to justice.
