Kohima, May 12: In a significant development reflecting ongoing peace-building efforts in the Northeast, one cadre of the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) surrendered before Assam Rifles and other security agencies in Nagaland on May 11, 2026.
Officials said the surrender took place following sustained outreach, coordination, and confidence-building measures undertaken by security forces aimed at encouraging misguided youth to return to the mainstream.
During the surrender process, a smartphone was recovered from the individual. Security agencies are examining the device as part of standard verification and intelligence procedures.
Authorities said the event highlights continued efforts by Assam Rifles and partner security agencies to promote peace, stability, and rehabilitation in the region through a combination of operational vigilance and community engagement initiatives.
They further reiterated that such surrenders reflect growing awareness among youth involved in insurgent activities about the futility of violence and the opportunities available for reintegration into society.
Security forces have been maintaining sustained outreach programmes across Nagaland and neighbouring states, focusing on counselling, engagement, and support mechanisms for those willing to leave extremist groups.
Officials added that the surrendered cadre will be processed under applicable rehabilitation policies, subject to verification and legal procedures, as part of the government’s broader approach to encourage peace and development in the Northeast.
