Unity and Self-Reliance

October 24, 2026 |

National unity and self-reliance are not merely political slogans; they are the foundations of a strong, resilient and confident India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to strengthen these ideals comes at a time when the country faces complex economic, social and geopolitical challenges. The message is clear: India’s progress depends on its ability to remain united at home and self-reliant in a competitive world.Unity is India’s greatest strength. Its diversity of languages, faiths, cultures and traditions is a source of national richness, not division. Yet social polarisation, communal distrust, regional rivalries and political hostility can weaken the bonds that hold the country together. National unity cannot be sustained through speeches alone. It must be reflected in governance, public discourse and everyday conduct. The responsibility is shared. Political leaders must rise above narrow electoral considerations, institutions must act fairly, and citizens must reject attempts to turn differences into hostility. Patriotism should mean respect for fellow citizens, constitutional values and the rights of all communities. A united India is not one in which everyone thinks alike, but one in which differences do not obstruct collective progress.Self-reliance is equally vital. The vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat seeks to strengthen domestic manufacturing, encourage innovation, support local enterprises and reduce excessive dependence on foreign supply chains. Recent global disruptions have demonstrated how vulnerable economies can become when essential goods, energy resources, technology and critical components depend heavily on external sources. However, self-reliance must not be confused with economic isolation. India needs global partnerships, investment, technology transfer and access to international markets. The objective should be to build domestic capacity, improve competitiveness and engage the world from a position of strength. For this vision to succeed, policy announcements must translate into opportunities on the ground. Small businesses need affordable credit, farmers require reliable markets, young people need employable skills, and researchers must receive support to turn ideas into practical solutions. Quality education, robust infrastructure and transparent administration are indispensable. Equally important is ensuring that the benefits of development reach weaker sections and remote regions. Self-reliance has little meaning if large sections remain excluded from economic opportunity. Growth must create jobs, reduce inequalities and strengthen public services. Ultimately, national unity and self-reliance reinforce each other. A divided society cannot pursue a common developmental mission, while an economically vulnerable nation finds it harder to safeguard its strategic interests. India’s future will depend not simply on the force of its slogans, but on the sincerity of its actions. Unity must be practised, self-reliance must be built, and development must be shared. Only then can the country transform national aspirations into lasting achievements.
