A spell of unseasonal rainfall and fresh snowfall has gripped Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, bringing a sudden drop in temperatures and prompting the Meteorological (MeT) Department to issue a cautionary weather advisory for the coming days.
Over the past few days, the Kashmir Valley has witnessed consistent rainfall, while higher-altitude regions have reported fresh snowfall. These weather changes have led to a sharp decline in both daytime and nighttime temperatures across the region.
On Sunday, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 19.5°C, a significant 7.5°C below the seasonal average. In Gulmarg, the famed ski destination, temperatures fell to 7.6°C, nearly 10 degrees below normal, following fresh snow in the surrounding mountains. Similarly, Pahalgam saw a maximum of 16.1°C, around 6.9 degrees below average.
Even Jammu, known for its typically hot summer weather, recorded a relatively cooler 35.5°C, which is 3.5°C below normal for this time of year.
According to the latest bulletin from the MeT Department:
On Tuesday, June 3, “fairly widespread showers” (FWS) are expected across J&K and Ladakh.
On Wednesday, June 4, another round of light to moderate rain or thundershowers is likely in several areas.
From June 5 to 6, the weather is expected to remain mostly dry, although isolated brief showers may occur, especially in the late afternoon or evening.
The department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds that were anticipated on the evening of Sunday, June 2. Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly in vulnerable areas.

People are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid venturing near:
Loose or temporary structures
Electrical poles and overhead wires
Weak or old trees
