Srinagar, June 11(:A video showing wildlife officials using improvised wooden sticks to capture a bear cub in Boniyar has raised concerns over the department’s preparedness and lack of basic rescue equipment.

The incident occurred in Boniyar, north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, after the cub was spotted near human habitation. The footage shows the team attempting to control the animal without specialized gear, protective equipment, tranquilizing devices, or dedicated rescue vehicles.
Local residents said that the operation highlighted the risks faced by both wildlife personnel and the public during human-wildlife encounters in Uri and Boniyar. They urged authorities to provide modern capture gear, tranquilizing equipment, protective clothing, and dedicated transport for rescue teams.
Wildlife experts warned that handling wild animals without proper tools endangers staff, residents, and the animals. They noted that similar operations across Jammu and Kashmir have repeatedly shown the need for trained personnel equipped with appropriate tools.
Manpower shortages compound the problem. Reports indicate only seven personnel, including four daily-wage workers, are tasked with responding to wildlife incidents across nearly 100 villages in Uri and Boniyar. Residents said the limited staffing makes it difficult to manage the rising number of emergencies.
The incident has renewed calls for strengthening the wildlife department’s infrastructure in vulnerable areas to ensure swift and safe responses.
