UT Admin Acts

January 10, 2022 |

After years of lackadaisical approach of various governments in Jammu and Kashmir in times of crisis, the present Union Territory administration under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has displayed immense capability to act on time and resolve the issue at the outset. This could be evident from the immediate intervention and coordination of various departments in snow clearance efforts or water logging issues in Srinagar or other towns of Kashmir after medium to heavy snowfall. Not only were the heavy machinery at work but men too were seen clearing the snow from the roads all over the valley under the watchful eyes of the administration. It was at the behest of the UT administration which saw bodies like SMC, Roads and Buildings, UEED and others on tenterhooks to avoid complaints from the public. The administration had the feeling of neglect during snowfall in previous years when there was hardly any mechanical wing operational of any department with the result mounds of snow got accumulated in all markets and roads and it was difficult to break it due to hardness from minus temperature.  People sensing apathy did compare the situation to erstwhile political formation but this January saw official machinery fully geared and undertaking massive exercise of snow clearance. This was at a time when LG and his team were busy in Gulf roping in business for Kashmir.  Apart from weather vagaries, the administration has been proactive in checking the surge of pandemic as health authorities have been keenly following the directions and circulars of the government in containment of Covid-19.  The Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been making inroads across the country and cases have been spiking at the same period when Jammu and Kashmir saw snow related issues cropping up.  The magnitude of the snowfall in this region could be gauged from the snowstorm that killed more than 22 tourists in the neighboring country’s hill station of Muree due to the unprepared administration there. The administration in Jammu and Kashmir was monitoring the situation arising out of western disturbance and its impact on UT as all the major link roads and passes were shut for any vehicular movement. This blocked tourists from rushing to the areas where landslides could have been dangerous and risky for them. The success in such eventualities is correlated to coordination of every agency responsible for their respective departments.  The achievable success during a crisis shows how those at helm could deliver by making all accountable.
