Hundreds of young athletes from across Baramulla district are participating in “Varmul Gindo,” the first-ever multi-discipline month-long sports fest, which began on Monday at Showket Ali Stadium.
Organised by the District Sports Association (DSA) Baramulla in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council and the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps under Operation Sadhbhavna, the festival features 18 sports disciplines including football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, cricket, kabaddi, kho-kho, badminton, athletics, and martial arts.
Over 78 teams and 1,600 individuals have registered for the fest, which aims to promote sportsmanship, fitness, and community engagement.
DSA President Omar Kakroo said the initiative is a major effort to foster unity and sporting excellence in the region. “It’s a great platform for youth to display talent and embrace a culture of teamwork,” he said.
Participants and spectators expressed enthusiasm, with GDC student Junaid Mir calling it the biggest sporting event the district has seen.
The games will conclude with a grand closing ceremony in July, where winners will be honoured.
