Whispers of the Growing Soul

November 20, 2024 | Rayees Yaseen

Every human being is a genius. If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend the rest of its life thinking that it is stupid. Discrimination against students based on their academic performance is an old practice is what we still continue to do, which has become pretty routine by now. Parents and even teachers are often seen hitting, insulting and humiliating students for their poor performance. If we still tend to pin the value of a child on a piece of paper, the prevailing question is: What is the main reason why this traditional mentality is still among us in the 21st century? One, of course, is the unique characteristics of our education system, especially the one followed by Indian society. Our Indian education system is always inclined towards and the society predicts that it can judge the child by how well he/she learns the lessons taught in schools and colleges on a sheet of paper. Has succeeded rather than how well they are able to apply these things in practice in their real life situations. This illogical importance is traditionally forced on the former so that students study for the sake of good grades and never learn for the sake of their future. In addition, the way our society fails to recognize the multiplicity of passions, talents, and dreams that children have beyond their academics puts an invisible pressure and pressure on their heads to do most of their own. Don't bother to enjoy education. These students, at least the majority of them, are conditioned to believe that the only way to success is through education and that nothing to be pursued is worth the time and effort. This leaves many talents undiscovered and talents unused. Considering the consequences of being discriminated against in educational institutions based on their poor performance, they may experience anxiety, clinical depression and even suicide. Go through the worst episodes of thoughts. In 2019 alone, we lost the precious lives of more than 10,000 students due to suicides in India, most of them around the time when the board and public exam results were out. It is also surprising to see that surveys show that at least 4 out of every 10 students in India go through clinical depression. I believe it is time we ask ourselves a very important question. What can we as a society do to prevent this from happening? First, try to understand that even the best intelligence test in the world cannot determine a child's future success. Instead of preparing children for a standardized test, prepare them for the terrifying world that awaits them on their doorstep. Secondly, analyze the current situation and understand that most of these children committed suicide either because they were afraid to face the consequences or because they lacked an educational purpose. I believe it can be avoided by assuring them that no entrance exam can ever determine how successful their life is. Explain to them that it is not always necessary to have academic goals, it is important that they continue to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be. Third, teach them to be kind, compassionate, determined, passionate, driven, and confident in all areas of their lives because that makes them unique. We already have a bunch of doctors and engineers in this world, we lack human beings, teach them to be the best of them. Last but not least assure them that; It's okay to fail, it's okay to fall, it's okay to falter… but it's never okay to quit.
