Why can’t Public Schools Perform Better than Private Schools in India ?

question all those educational policy makers, and authorizes handling and controlling educational systems at district state and center level.

In the modern competitive world, each country stresses hard on the modern and advanced tools, techniques and methods to develop their countries in one way or the other. And to every development one can’t leave the Education System aside. Education system plays pivotal role in the development of a country. India being far away in the list of quality education index, have in the good race to improve the quality of education in the country.
Many foreign educational, policies, patterns and models have been applied to develop education system of the country, yet seeming a dream to level and balance system as compared to other countries. The swift shift from public to private unaided schools is increasing day by day to meet competitive quality education to the children under private unaided schools. Approximately 50% of students are enrolled in private schools and increasing. While numbers of admissions in public aided schools are decreasing. Searching for the logical reasons, many educationists and policy makers have presented their analysis, giving reasons about the poor quality education in the country’s public Government aided schools. Surely their analysis might be up to mark in readings. But are not what the ground level situation in the country’s education system demands.
I question all those educational policy makers, and authorizes handling and controlling educational systems at district state and center level. Why is this system going down day by day? Although spending huge amount on the system why the quality is decreasing day by day? Why you couldn’t find the reason till now, of what makes private schools different from Govt schools? Yes! answers to all such questions are on tip of tongue to all of you. But solutions to all these seem yet a dream for you. There are many a reasons on the ground, which haven’t been addressed seriously by the authorizes to remove this gap. Simultaneously, I am to address some of unaddressed reasons that put the system at the God’s mercy.
Let’s firstly look at the teaching faculties at the primary level of Govt run schools. I know this will go beyond the heads of majority. But sooner or later, we have to accept reality that every Tom, Dick and Harry had been placed as teacher at primary level before two three decades and present students are still compelled to comprise them. You might be well known about such teachers, who have been placed only because they would have lost their father or guardian who used to feed the family. And Govt feeling pity on the family would engage a family member as a teacher without seeing whether the person meets eligibility criteria or not. I am not opposite to this policy or scheme but can’t such people be adjusted in other departments. Why only in teaching department? Is this because we are proving that this department is such useless that adjusts everyone at every go.
At the same time, the teachers who come under this category, should have studied more to improve their method of teaching as done by many to do justice with their job and especially to their students. But Alas! You can be witness of such teachers heading towards retirement still are unable to read and write correctly. At least I am witness of this case and I don’t hesitate to say it.
The second part of the list is about the curriculum and text books. Which surely makes a huge difference between the two school sectors. If you have time to look at the text books of government as well as private schools. You may find a huge difference. This difference may look for a shorter period for you. But not, in the foundational stage of a student. It certainly makes the difference for the lifetime of a student. Every year we see new Educational Policies, National Curriculum Framework policies are implemented on papers but are yet to meet quality education in the public sector. If Educational Policy makers considering NCERT publications better than other private publishers. Then why most of the Government primary school going students are not up to mark as compared to private primary level students?
This doesn’t end here, there are many known reasons that are revolving around your mind, but such unaddressed reasons that question and make administration and policy makers accountable are to be held at the priority. After implementation of every plan, do they ask for results and its success and failure percentage on the ground? No, not at all, every year many laws, plans, patterns and models are imposed on the system in general and students in particular. But nothing is being done to look how these plans, patterns, laws and models benefit and develop. How far this one way communication will go?. I repeat my question. If a head master or principal of private primary or middle school can handle and control the whole school of hundreds of students on the salary of ten to fifteen thousands. Why can’t your headmaster or principal handle school of fifty to hundred students on the salary of thirty to sixty thousands? What makes the difference? And how many times you took the matter to the authority desk? Will you please let’s know, why parents prefer to pay huge amount rather than sending them to free schools that even provide them mid day meals? This is all from accountability, pressure, devotion and responsibility. Which is unfortunately missing in most of the Government run schools. And we still not ready to accept this reality.
Hence, the time has come to seek solutions to all these issues rather than to make new plans and patterns on papers. If we look at the education system of other countries like USA, where more than 90% of students prefer public schools than private. Surely huge amount is spent on the public education system, what make it weak its unaccountability, irresponsibility and sincerity from both the ends higher authorities as well as school administrations. This issue is becoming hotter day by day, for not receiving any serious and developmental response. This must be addressed and resolved to make the system qualitative and competitive.
