A woman died in flash floods triggered by multiple cloudbursts in the Lolab area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday.
According to reports, Begum Jan (50), wife of Ab Rashid Khatana of Moori Kalaroose, slipped into the river and was washed away by the flash floods. Her body was later recovered by locals and police, the repots added.
Multiple cloudbursts were reported in the Lolab, Batpora, Trumnaad, Zarhama, and Hyhama areas of Kupwara district. Locals said the cloud burst in Batpora-Hyhama caused flash floods that damaged various roads in the Hyhama area. Vehicles were unable to use the road.
Official sources said that the flash floods caused large-scale damage to standing crops and partially damaged a school building at Batpora-Hyhama.
One bridge connecting Batpora was also damaged by the flash flood.
Reports also said that almost three PHE schemes, PDD transformers, Low Tension (LT), High Tension (HT) electric poles were damaged and washed away by the floods.
The Deputy Commissioner (Kupwara), Ayushi Sudan, visited Hyhama and interacted with officials of concerned departments to get a stock of the situation on ground.
Farmers have appealed to the authorities to assess the loss caused and compensate them accordingly.
Meanwhile, the district administration has asked concerned officials to make a proper assessment of the damage and prepare reports for action to be taken. Meanwhile, electricity and water supply is being restored on priority basis.
