Women candidates lead the charge on Nagrota bypolls

October 22, 2025 | Ayaan Wani

The women are leading the charge in the Nagrota bypolls, which alongwith the Budgam seat will be held on November 11.

The bypolls in Nagrota seat was necessitated by the death of the sitting BJP MLA and former NC leader Devender Singh Rana in October last year.
In a bid to retain the seat and capitalize on the sympathy wave, the BJP has fielded Devyani Rana, the deceased BJP MLaAs daughter, marking her political debut. The party is projecting her as a young, educated, and determined face who can carry forward her father’s legacy while connecting with youth and women voters in the constituency.
The NC, which is contesting the seat after its ally Congress refused to contest from the seat, has fielded DDC member Shameema Firdous.
In 2024 Assembly polls, BJP’s Devender Rana defeated NC’s candidate Joginder Singh in the Nagrota seat by 30,472 votes while Congress candidate stood a distant third.
Earlier, Rana won the seat in the 2014 polls as a nominee of the JKNC.
The by poll serves as a litmus test for the NC’s ability to reclaim ground and for the BJP’s hold in Jammu region assembly politics.
The Nagrota constituency located on the outskirts of Jammu city has historically been a politically active and strategically important region, often viewed as a bellwether for wider political trends in the Jammu division.
The bypoll is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest, though the primary battle remains between the BJP and NC candidates.
With both parties intensifying door-to-door campaigns and outreach programs, the Nagrota bypoll is expected to be closely fought. The counting of votes for both Nagrota and Budgam bypolls will take place on November 14.
