Words that burn Hearts

April 25, 2026 | Malik Manzoor

Many social evils plague our society, including boasting, lying, cheating, adulteration, slander, scandal mongering, backbiting, and hypocrisy. Among these, backbiting, scandal mongering, and hypocrisy are especially destructive—and they are closely interconnected.

Hypocrisy is a particularly grave concern that must be strongly discouraged. It ruins personal relationships, shatters deep friendships, and undermines entire societies by breeding confusion and mistrust.
People skilled in hypocrisy use it strategically: they analyze a person's psychology, speak negatively about others to build false rapport, flatter to gain trust, and later betray that trust through backbiting—all for personal gain. For example, a junior employee may praise their senior while harshly criticizing a rival; a subordinate may use flattery and backbiting for advancement; or a less powerful person may spread scandals to win favor from someone more influential. Sadly, people often believe these hypocrites, which damages relationships and friendships irreparably.
Prosperity is everyone's right, but prosperity gained by harming others is a betrayal of humanity. Wealth or influence acquired through cunning is not true prosperity—it destroys justice, values, and honesty. Modern ambition, when paired with callousness, breeds negligence, and persistent negligence leads to ethical blindness. When wealth becomes the sole motive, the means grow darker, for there are no fair shortcuts to its accumulation. Shortcuts are inherently unethical, and those who take them resort to the worst tactics—none more dangerous than slander and deliberately false accusations.
Scandal mongering is another social evil that belittles others' character through fabricated stories and statements. All of this is done by a small piece of flesh—the tongue. It is not merely flesh; it is a dangerous tool that can do great good or great harm. Speaking ill of others behind their backs adversely affects our own lives. We forget that suggesting evil through words or gestures, scandal mongering, mimicry, sarcasm, and character assassination are strongly condemned in sacred texts such as the Quran, the Bhagavad Gita, the Guru Granth Sahib, and the Bible.
The Quran warns: "Woe to every scandal-monger and backbiter" (Surah Al-Humazah 104:1).
The Bible states: "For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body" (James 3:2).
The Bhagavad Gita describes divine qualities as including "freedom from slander/backbiting, compassion for all beings, and freedom from greed," while pride and ostentation belong to demonic tendencies (Chapter 16).
The Guru Granth Sahib declares: "The slanderer carries the great burden of sins; without payment, he carries heavy loads."
Despite these clear religious teachings, people continue to deceive cleverly, wearing masks of innocence while betraying others.
Our religious scholars and clerics have failed to convey these religious verses and their true connotations effectively. The only remedy for this plague is moral education and self-introspection.
