One year later, in 1973, the first WED was held with the theme ‘Only one earth.’ The primary purpose of World Environment Day is to raise global awareness and encourage action on pressing environmental issues. Every year there is a theme for the celebrating of WED. The theme for WED 2025 is ‘Ending global plastic pollution.’ It is one of the most relevant themes as all of us face the plastic pollution problem and we should take serious steps to minimise plastic pollution and save humanity from the perils of plastic pollution.
It directs the life of everyone and determines the proper growth and development. Celebrating WED is an effort to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment and natural world. The day brings together millions of people across the globe in a shared mission to safeguard and restore our planet, empowering governments, businesses, communities and individuals to drive sustainable changes. Every year on June 5, we engage hundreds of millions of people around the world with a planetary call to action. We have to combat climate change and try to minimise the adverse impact of this change by practising environment friendly practices. Our biodiversity is in peril. Extinction rates are at their highest in a thousand years with one million out of the eight million species facing being wiped out.
Three quarter of the world’s land is significantly degraded, and 85% of the area of global wetlands have already been lost. And we are chocking on pollution. Air pollution is one of the biggest killers on the planet. Two billion people live without access to waste disposal systems and by 2025, two-thirds of the world will live under water -stressed conditions. Addressing the triple planetary crisis is critical to peace and security. Rightly the WED theme for 2025 that is ending plastic pollution has been chosen and all of us should take serious steps to minimise plastic pollution and we can start by making it a habit to go market for shopping with a gunny or cloth bad and not take items from the shop -keepers in plastic bags. Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems today. Plastic items take hundreds of years to break down. They harm animals, pollute our oceans, and even enter our food and water. It is time for all of us to respond and do everything possible to contain plastic pollution for our own well -being and for the interest of the future generations., We can begin by saying no to single -use plastics, by carrying our own bags and encouraging other to do the same. Governments and industries also need to find better ,eco-friendly solutions.
This year’s theme is very apt and opportune and it is hoped that we will be able to minimise plastic pollution to a vast extant Environment protection very important and citizens worldwide should strive to safeguard environment such as mother earth, natural beauty wildlife, mountains, woods, streams, rivers and fauna, flora, vegetation, meadows and everything else connected with the environment. We should preserve and safeguard our environment for ourselves and for the coming generations. Men should do nothing which impairs and disturbs the ecology and the environment. All the religions also teach us to be environment conscious and to protect it for our own good. Hinduism teaches us to protect environment and in religion, Hindus worship all the forms of nature including mountains, trees, rivers and rivulets. Hinduism teaches us to revere and respect environment and nature and thus we should not do anything that disturbs the environmental balance.People should be made aware about the preservation and protection of environment and this is the reason that environmental studies are now taught as a separate subject in school curriculum.
We should not tinker with the natural habitats and environment and wildlife but try to preserve and protect it for our own good. Saints and seers have also taught us to be environment friendly and be conscious of our duty and responsibility towards protecting environment. Many years ago Sheikh Noor -ud-din Nooorani who is also called Nund Rish has said Ann Pushi tele Yeli Van Pushi which can be roughly translated as food grains will last when our jungles are protected. Worship of nature in its varied forms is taught by Hinduism. To conclude it can be said that on this years WED we should take a pledge to preserve, protect environment and take steps in the direction of minimising of minimising the plastic pollution.
