
Bandipora, Feb 8: Yameen Sports Academy Bandipora has scripted a remarkable chapter in north Kashmir’s sporting journey by delivering medal-winning performances at two national-level martial arts championships, firmly establishing the district as an emerging centre of combat sports excellence.
Founded with the aim of promoting sports in far-flung and remote areas, the academy has grown steadily under the guidance of its founder Muzaffar Ahmad, an Uttam Bharat Puruskar Awardee and professional martial arts coach. The academy’s athletes recently showcased their strength and technical prowess at the Ju-Jitsu National Championship held in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, from December 19 to 23, 2025.
At the championship, the Bandipora contingent delivered a standout performance, securing a total of 12 medals comprising five gold, two silver, and five bronze. The achievement marked a major milestone for the academy and reflected the disciplined training and competitive readiness of its athletes.
Gold medals were clinched by Shakeela Hilal and Umar Altaf in the Ne-Waza category, Ehsan Aijaz in Fighting, Ulfat Altaf in Contact Fighting, and Sadiya Bashir in Ne-Waza. Silver medals were won by Iqra Yousuf in Contact Fighting and Sadiya Bashir in Fighting. Bronze medals went to Lone Abdul Basit in Fighting, Momin Nazir in Contact Fighting, Ulfat Altaf in Ne-Waza, and Subaya Shafi, who secured two bronze medals in Fighting and Ne-Waza. Tawseen Bashir, Sahil Farooq, and Faizan Fayaz also represented the academy at the event.
The academy sustained its momentum at the KUDO Championship held at Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu, from February 2 to 4, organised by the Kudo Association of Jammu and Kashmir. At the event, Iram Afzal won a gold medal, while Saliha Rehman, Ulfat Altaf, Humaira Hassan, Suhail Shameem, and Mohammad Haris secured silver medals. Qasim Shabir and Mohammad Zaid added bronze medals to the medal tally.
Athletes and coaches credited the academy’s structured training environment and sustained support system for the success. Two-time national player Ulfat Altaf said her journey has not been without challenges, particularly as a female athlete, but perseverance and guidance from her coaches helped her overcome barriers and perform at the national level.
Parents of athletes also expressed pride in the achievements, acknowledging the role played by the academy’s coaching staff, including Amina and Ibrahim, in nurturing talent from the grassroots.
Coach Ibrahim Bhat said the academy was established to bring sports opportunities to remote pockets of the district. He said the academy has expanded its presence across Bandipora, with units functioning in areas such as Nadihal, Quil Muqam, Tarkpora, Nusoo, and adjoining localities. He also acknowledged the encouragement extended by the Indian Army in promoting sports and positive youth engagement
