South Kashmir has witnessed decades of unrest, violence, and instability. However, the future of the it lies in the hands of its youth. To break the cycle of violence and foster sustainable peace, it’s imperative that young people are engaged in productive governmental schemes. But how can this be achieved in an area with such a complex history? Let’s explore some effective strategies to involve youth and move towards a peaceful future. First, youth engagement must begin with empowerment. For too long, young people have been marginalized, not just socially but economically. The key to breaking the chains of historical violence lies in ensuring the youth have access to quality education, skill development programs, and employment opportunities. Government schemes such as the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) or the Start-Up India initiative can provide young people with avenues to channel their energies into entrepreneurial ventures. When youth are busy building businesses, they’re less likely to fall prey to violence or radicalization.

Additionally, the introduction of training programs in areas such as IT, construction, and hospitality will prepare the youth for the workforce while fostering a sense of purpose. It’s important that these programs are locally relevant, addressing the specific needs of South Kashmir’s economic and social landscape. These skills can not only reduce unemployment but also empower young people to stand on their feet and contribute to society. Another essential strategy is to provide mentorship opportunities. Connecting youth with professionals, business leaders, and educators who can guide and inspire them will help build confidence and provide clarity about career paths. Initiatives like the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) can be further expanded in South Kashmir, ensuring young people have access to career advice and networks that would otherwise be out of reach. Furthermore, sports and cultural activities play a crucial role in redirecting the energy of youth. Engaging young people in activities like sports tournaments, music, theatre, and art can be a powerful way to foster social unity. These events not only serve as entertainment but also act as platforms for peaceful expression. Governmental and non-governmental organizations must support such activities and create safe spaces for youth to showcase their talents.
Governmental schemes should focus on providing mental health support through counseling centers and therapy sessions. By addressing emotional scars due to turmoil, drugs and unemployment, youth can be guided towards healing and productive engagement. Finally, the involvement of youth in decision-making is paramount. Policies impacting the youth must be created with their input. There must be a seat at the table for young voices to help shape the future of the region. Initiatives like youth councils, where young people can participate in civic engagement and express their concerns, can promote a sense of ownership and pride in the community. Involving the youth in productive governmental schemes requires a holistic approach. Education, skill development, mentorship, sports, mental health support, and active participation in decision-making will collectively help steer South Kashmir’s youth away from violence and towards a prosperous and peaceful future.
