Making Best Use of Quarantine Time

March 31, 2020 | Azra Mufti

There are two ways to use our pandemic generated quarantine time instituted by the local authorities on us, either we can drain our internet by binge watching movies, sitcoms, serials and documentaries or we can use this time to transform our life. We can give shape to our ideas, cultivate healthy habits, change our lifestyle and transform our lives. People who value their time will make best use of this time and they won’t even realize when the day passes. There are so many habits and activities that can transform our personality and open new vistas in our lives. A healthy lifestyle can be followed even in these tough times to deviate our minds from the anxieties and gloominess. The more we keep a vigil on the number of cases and the death toll, the more it robs our sanity from us. The best way to fight this crisis is to pick up any productive hobby and learn something new from it with each passing day. Some of the activities that can be employed are:
Bring out your creative side: Every person is special and I believe each one of us is blessed with a special talent or skill. Due to the internet addiction; most of the people spend huge time on their screens rather than following their passion. I have seen people who have exemplary culinary, calligraphy, writing and painting skills. They can make best use of this time to polish their skills and learn more of this art and craft. The more they work on their skills, the more interest they develop for the same. Thus instead of wasting their time, they should squeeze their creative juices and make best use of this time.
Nourish your personal relations: we are the generation of “one-liners” meaning when our parents want to spend time with us, we hardly bother to answer in words other than yes or no, sometimes we just nod our heads because we are too busy to answer their questions, this is really a sorry state of affairs. As we fight this pandemic together, it is just the right time to nourish our relations, spend quality time with our parents, discuss our future goals and plans with them, listen to their childhood stories and learn from their experiences. Talking to parents has a therapeutic effect and one feels refreshing after a deep and intense conversation with parents. Try to call your friends with whom the relations are sour and try to bring sweetness in your relation.
Read, read and read: “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies”. This stands true as books transport you to other places without moving an inch. Reading good books can transform your vision, make you an epicentre of knowledge and help develop empathy. There are a number of books that can be downloaded for free and people can read according to the genre they love. They can read about history of valley, biographies of great people, stories of Sahabas and other historic books. Reading can actually help you fight this pandemic like a warrior.
Maintain a journal: I am reminded of Anne Frank these days; her journal has taken the world by storm that she wrote while fighting a war. Maintaining a journal and making entries everyday will help us revising these moments again and again. A report by Psyccentral says that keeping a journal can help you clarify thoughts and feelings. Writing can actually help a person release his stress because pen has more patience than people.
