The Environmental Policy Group (EPG) has raised concerns over political interference and unscientific planning undermining environmental protection in Jammu and Kashmir. EPG Convenor Faiz Ahmad Bakshi said that encroachers and vested interests are being shielded, threatening fragile ecosystems such as Hokersar and Shalbugh wetlands.
In Hokersar, false claims about submerged paddy fields are being used to justify illegal land reclamation, while desilting at Shalbugh has been arbitrarily halted, increasing flood risks. Bakshi criticized political disruptions in Srinagar’s urban wetlands, including Eidgah and Shallbugh, calling for immediate action to safeguard ecological assets.
The proposed Polo Ground flyover risks felling nearly 90 heritage chinar trees and destroying central recreational spaces. Similarly, construction near Nigeen Lake violates environmental norms and the 200-metre eco-sensitive buffer zone, threatening the lake’s ecosystem. EPG demanded halting such projects and conducting comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) before further development.
Bakshi urged the government to adopt science-based, transparent policies that prioritize conservation over political convenience, in line with the Supreme Court’s December 2024 directive to protect wetlands.
