Aizawl/Guwahati: In a major crackdown on illicit trafficking, Assam Rifles and Indian Army formations under the Spear Corps, in coordination with state police, conducted targeted joint operations in Mizoram and Assam, leading to the seizure of contraband worth over ₹2 crore.

In Mizoram’s Champhai district, joint teams recovered 12,000 kg of areca nuts valued at approximately ₹1.32 crore during an operation along the Zote–Hmunhmeltha Road. The recovery is being seen as a significant blow to suspected illicit trafficking networks operating in the border region.
In a separate operation in Assam’s Tinsukia district, security forces apprehended a suspected drug dealer and seized 102.04 grams of heroin estimated to be worth ₹76.53 lakh.
The operations were carried out through coordinated efforts involving the Assam Rifles, Indian Army and state police, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling organised trafficking and cross-border movement of contraband.
The seizures underscore the continuing challenges posed by illicit trafficking routes in the Northeast, where difficult terrain and proximity to international borders can be exploited by criminal networks.
Officials said such coordinated operations demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing and joint action by security agencies and state police. The recovery of the contraband and arrest of the suspected drug dealer are expected to disrupt networks involved in the illegal movement of narcotics and other goods.
The latest operations also reaffirm the security forces’ commitment to maintaining peace and strengthening security across the region while preventing trafficking networks from exploiting vulnerable routes.
With the combined value of the seized contraband estimated at ₹2.08 crore, the operations mark another significant intervention against illegal trafficking activities in Mizoram and Assam.
