A signal to harsh winter

Srinagar shivers at minus 2.1 degrees Celsius, Shopian district coldest at minus 5.5 degrees Celsius

November 28, 2024 | BK News Service
Srinagar experienced a significant drop in temperature, with the mercury touching -2.1°C (night temperature) signaling the onset of harsh winter conditions
 in the Kashmir Valley.

The night-time chill intensified across the region with the southern district of Shopian emerging as the coldest place, recording a bone-chilling low of -5.5°C.

This dip in temperatures is prelude to the Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period in Kashmir that typically starts from December 21.

During this phase, the region witnesses intense cold, frequent snowfall, and frozen water bodies, including parts of the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar.

These cold conditions often disrupt daily life.

Such temperature variations highlight the stark weather conditions of the valley, where the nights are freezing and even daytime temperatures struggle to rise above freezing levels in many areas. Residents and authorities are bracing for further drops in temperature and the challenges they bring, particularly in remote and higher-altitude areas like Shopian.
