Srinagar, July 15: National Conference Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Wednesday paid tribute to senior party leader and former minister Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, describing his death as a significant loss to both the National Conference and the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters, Ruhullah said Dr Kamal remained one of the party's most steadfast leaders and consistently championed the National Conference's ideology, particularly its position on autonomy and constitutional commitments.

"It is a huge loss for the National Conference. Dr Mustafa Kamal remained unwavering in the party's ideology of autonomy and constitutional commitments. He was among the strongest advocates and voices for autonomy," Ruhullah said.

Reflecting on their association, the MP said he had worked closely with Dr Kamal in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, where the veteran leader earned respect for his experience, dedication and firm adherence to the party's principles.

"He was a senior colleague. We served together in the Assembly. He remained committed to the National Conference's ideology and was a strong advocate of autonomy. We have lost one of the party's most dedicated leaders," Ruhullah added.

Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, a former Cabinet minister, senior National Conference leader and younger brother of party president Dr Farooq Abdullah, passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness.
