Kargil, July 5: Endurance runner Anuj Mahajan from Jammu created a memorable milestone by becoming the first participant to complete the 10 km race barefoot at the Sarhad Shauryathon 2026 – Kargil International Marathon.
Hosted by the Indian Army in collaboration with the Pune-based NGO Sarhad, the high-altitude marathon is organized to honor the courage, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of the heroes of the 1999 Kargil War.
Running barefoot was not a sporting challenge for Anuj Mahajan—it was a heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who fought under some of the harshest conditions to safeguard the nation's sovereignty. With every step, he paid homage to the extraordinary courage and selfless sacrifice of the Kargil War heroes.
Anuj successfully completed the 10 km run barefoot despite the demanding terrain and high-altitude conditions. His unique tribute drew admiration and appreciation from fellow runners, spectators, organizers, and Army personnel, who applauded his determination and the powerful message behind his run.
Speaking after the event, Anuj Mahajan said, "This run was never about setting a record or chasing a medal. It was my humble way of expressing gratitude to the brave soldiers of the Indian Army. The discomfort of running barefoot is insignificant compared to the hardships they endured while defending our nation. Every step was dedicated to the heroes of Kargil."
Known for promoting fitness and endurance sports, Anuj Mahajan has completed several long-distance races and is currently preparing for an upcoming 50 km ultra marathon, with a long-term goal of completing an Ironman.
His barefoot run at the Sarhad Shauryathon 2026 stands as a symbol of patriotism, resilience, and respect for India's armed forces, inspiring many to remember that the freedom we enjoy today has been earned through the immense sacrifices of our soldiers.
