Artisan Bashir seeks CFC for willow craft revival

July 06, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, July 5: As traditional crafts across Kashmir face mounting challenges from changing markets and declining interest among the younger generation, veteran willow artisan Bashir Ahmad of Ganderbal has called for the establishment of a Common Facility Centre (CFC) to revive the region's centuries-old willow wicker craft and create sustainable employment opportunities for local youth.

Speaking about the craft, Bashir Ahmad said willow work is one of Kashmir's oldest cottage industries, providing livelihoods to thousands of artisan families over the decades. From beautifully handcrafted baskets and storage containers to furniture, decorative items and utility products, willow craftsmanship has long been admired for its durability, eco-friendly nature and artistic appeal.
He said the industry, however, is facing numerous challenges, including rising production costs, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to modern tools, shrinking markets and stiff competition from factory-made plastic and synthetic products.
"A Common Facility Centre would provide artisans with modern equipment, improved finishing facilities, design support, training and better marketing opportunities. It would significantly improve product quality while reducing production costs," Bashir Ahmad said.
He stressed that such a centre would also encourage young people to take up the traditional craft by offering skill development programmes, design innovation and entrepreneurship support, helping preserve a valuable part of Kashmir's cultural heritage.
The artisan noted that despite growing demand for sustainable and handmade products in national and international markets, many local craftsmen struggle due to the absence of common processing facilities, packaging units and organised marketing networks.
He urged the government to introduce focused schemes for willow artisans, including financial assistance, easier access to credit, participation in trade fairs, digital marketing support and export promotion initiatives.
Bashir Ahmad observed that strengthening the willow sector would not only preserve a traditional craft but also generate employment, promote rural entrepreneurship and contribute to the local economy.
Calling upon policymakers to prioritise the establishment of a Common Facility Centre in Ganderbal, he said timely intervention could breathe new life into the historic craft, inspire the younger generation to embrace their cultural legacy and ensure that Kashmir's renowned willow artistry continues to flourish for generations to come.
