Shillong, Sep 23: Assam Rifles organised a workshop on empathy education for teachers of Assam Rifles Public Schools (ARPS) Primary on Wednesday, focusing on the role of empathy in supporting the emotional and social development of young learners.
The workshop was attended by 27 teachers from ARPS (Primary), Laitkor, and ARPS (Primary), Assam Rifles Signal Unit.
Mrs Vibha Lakhera, Founder of Project Empathy and President of Assam Rifles Wives Welfare Association (ARWWA), was one of the resource persons. She introduced participants to the fundamentals of empathy and highlighted its importance in understanding emotions, fostering compassion and creating a nurturing learning environment.
Mrs Sijina Nambiar, Research Associate, Trainer and Coordinator with Project Empathy, was the second resource person. She shared insights into practical, empathy-driven approaches that teachers can incorporate into classroom interactions and student support.
The workshop encouraged teachers to look beyond academic performance and recognise the emotional and social needs of children. Participants were sensitised to the importance of listening, understanding different perspectives and responding to young learners with patience and compassion.
The interactive sessions also emphasised the role of teachers in creating safe and supportive classrooms where children feel understood, respected and encouraged to express themselves.
The initiative underlined the importance of integrating empathy into education to help children develop positive relationships, emotional awareness and social skills alongside academic abilities.
The workshop concluded with teachers gaining practical insights into empathy-based approaches that can contribute to the holistic development and well-being of young learners.
