Assam Rifles hosts media interns

Showcasing army’s role in nation-building

Dimapur/Kohima, Aug 31:In a unique initiative aimed at bridging the gap between the armed forces and the civilian youth, the Assam Rifles, under the aegis of the Indian Army, recently hosted a group of student interns at its Headquarters in Dimapur and Kohima. The visit marked the culmination of the Indian Army’s Pilot Media Internship Programme, a 10-week immersive experience designed to offer budding media professionals a closer look at the Army’s vital contributions beyond the battlefield.
Launched on 15 June, the programme brought together selected students from media and communication backgrounds across the country. Over the duration of the internship, the participants were exposed to the operational and administrative roles of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, particularly in the context of the North East region, known for its strategic importance and complex socio-political dynamics.
Interns visited various army establishments, interacted with officers and jawans, and learned about the Indian Army’s roles in counter-insurgency operations, disaster response, infrastructure development, community outreach, and peace-building efforts in the region. The experience gave them a nuanced understanding of the Army's role as not just a security force, but a pillar of nation-building and regional development.
As part of the programme, the students actively contributed to the Army’s information warfare and narrative-building efforts. They created a wide array of content — from articles and blogs to videos, posters, and short films — that highlighted stories of courage, resilience, and service. Their work will be utilized in public communication campaigns, helping to portray the armed forces in a multidimensional light.
Officers from the Assam Rifles praised the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the interns. “This internship was not just about learning media skills — it was about understanding the soul of the Indian Army,” said a senior official from Assam Rifles. “These young minds now carry a story of service and sacrifice that they can share with the world.”
Participants expressed gratitude for the rare opportunity. “The exposure we received is something no classroom could offer,” said one intern. “It changed the way we perceive the Army — we now see it as a force for change, unity, and hope.”
With its successful execution, the Pilot Media Internship Programme may become a regular feature, encouraging more students to explore the lesser-known human and developmental aspects of India’s armed forces.
The initiative stands as a testament to the Army’s evolving approach towards civil-military relations, transparency, and public engagement — laying the groundwork for a stronger national narrative rooted in firsthand experience and informed storytelling.
