The one-week online workshop on “Research Publications Ethics,” organised by the Department of English, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) began at Arts campus from Monday.
Addressing the participants, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A Ravinder Nath, emphasized the importance of research in academia, providing a brief overview of its foundational principles and objectives. He stressed that research is a continuous process through which knowledge is gained and disseminated, shaping society's intellectual progress. Prof. A Ravinder Nath said that as a Central University, CUKashmir holds a significant position in promoting research ethics. He also highlighted the responsibility of the institution to be at the forefront of cultivating a culture of ethical research practices among students and faculty. He outlined the purpose and scope of research, categorizing it into two major types: I. Academic Research: Focused on exploring new concepts and theories and II. Applied Research: Directed toward uncovering the practical utility of pre-existing concepts.
Guest speaker, Professor at the School of Commerce and Business Management, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, Prof. Saneem Fatima, in her speech focussed on the importance of research in education, especially in the context of technological advancements. She emphasized that as technology continues to evolve, the role of teachers becomes even more crucial as educators and facilitators of critical thinking and innovation. “Education, is the foundation of knowledge, equipping individuals with the ability to comprehend the world, explore new ideas, and develop solutions to pressing problems.” She also highlighted the United Nations Sustainable Development Group’s (UNSDG) goal of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all, stressing that higher education fosters collective capabilities and associative learning among students.
Speaking on the occasion, Dean School of Languages, Head Department of English and convener of the workshop, Prof. Sandhya Tiwari said, the workshop aims to equip researchers, academics, and students with essential knowledge and skills to maintain the highest standards of ethics in research and publications. “The workshop will cover critical topics such as research misconduct, plagiarism, authorship, conflict of interest, peer review process, and publication ethics,” she said, adding renowned experts in research ethics and publications will lead interactive sessions, case studies, and group discussions and the participants will gain insights into best practices for research design, methodology, data management, and manuscript preparation. Prof. Sandhya said, 22 participants are from 11 States/UT which include, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Delhi, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, UP, Jharkhand.
