CUKashmir hosts Ambedkar lecture on democratic values

April 13, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Ganderbal, April 13: Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) on Monday organised a special lecture on “B. R. Ambedkar and the Moral Foundations of Indian Democracy: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity as Social Ethics” at its Tulmulla campus, in collaboration with the OBC, SC/ST/PwD Cell and the Dean Students Welfare office, as part of the 135th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Anil Kumar, Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, emphasized Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of “associated living,” stating that democracy is a continuous dialogue built on mutual respect and listening even amid disagreement. He underlined that democracy must go beyond constitutional provisions to be rooted in lived realities of social justice, dignity, and equality. Highlighting caste-based inequalities, he stressed that true democratic values cannot exist alongside persistent social hierarchies and exclusion.

Chief Guest Prof. Shahid Rasool, Dean Academic Affairs and Dean School of Media Studies, highlighted the enduring relevance of Ambedkar’s ideas in contemporary India. He noted that India’s constitutional strength, despite early post-independence challenges, is a result of Ambedkar’s vision and contributions. He also encouraged critical engagement with thinkers and emphasized that Ambedkar promoted scientific temper and education to overcome superstition and regressive social practices.

Prof. Rasool urged participants to uphold justice and equality in everyday life, calling for moral courage to oppose injustice regardless of caste, religion, or identity.

As part of the programme, participants also took an oath under the “Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan,” pledging to combat drug abuse and promote a healthier society. An awareness video on the initiative was also screened.

Earlier, Dean Students Welfare Dr. Jehirul Islam appreciated the participation of students and faculty and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to inclusive and democratic values. The session was introduced by Dr. Altaf Hussain, while Dr. John Babu Koyye moderated the programme and emphasized the role of youth in ethical citizenship and social justice.

The event concluded with the distribution of prizes and certificates for competitions held on April 9–10, including essay writing, elocution, and cultural activities. Ms. Insha Mushtaq served as rapporteur for the programme.
