Srinagar, October 29: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of Crime Branch J&K has filed a chargesheet against five persons in connection with an alleged land fraud involving migrant property worth over ₹1 crore.
The chargesheet in FIR No. 34/2017 was presented before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sopore, under Sections 420, 419, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), relating to alleged cheating, impersonation, forgery and criminal conspiracy.
The case concerns 14 kanals and 3 marlas of land bearing Survey No. 349 at Wussan, Goshbugh, Pattan, owned by Jawahar Lal Bhat. According to the complaint, payments exceeding ₹1 crore were made in connection with the transaction, but the complainant was neither given possession of the property nor refunded the amount.
Investigators allegedly found evidence of a conspiracy involving impersonation, fabricated identity documents and the misuse of a purported Power of Attorney to facilitate the transaction.
The five accused named in the chargesheet are Brij Nath, alias Soom Nath, Hadi Nath and Mohan Lal, a resident of Amit Nagar, Muthi, Jammu; Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar of Samson, Budgam; Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh of Sachen Banit, Beerwah, Budgam; and Zahoor Ahmed Dar and Reyaz Ahmad Rather, both residents of Margipora, Pattan, Baramulla.
According to the available details, Brij Nath and Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar were arrested in late September. Dar was subsequently granted bail, while Brij Nath remains lodged in Central Jail.
The EOW had earlier filed a chargesheet in August 2023 in another case, FIR No. 27/2021, against Brij Nath and Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh. The latest filing marks a second chargesheet against both individuals, according to the agency.
The Senior Superintendent of Police, EOW Kashmir, has urged people to carefully verify land ownership records, identity documents and legal papers before entering into property transactions to avoid financial losses and fraudulent dealings.
