In a swift and decisive action, Srinagar Police have uncovered an online fraud racket involving a fake medical donation appeal posted on Facebook.
On May 30, 2025, Police Station Nowhatta received a written complaint from Muneer Ahmad Misger, son of Mohammad Sadiq Misger, a resident of Mughal Masjid, Nowhatta. In the complaint, Misger stated that an unidentified individual posing as a journalist had uploaded a photograph of his sister on Facebook along with a fabricated story claiming she needed funds for a medical surgery that never took place. The fraudulent post was aimed at misleading the public and collecting donations under false pretenses.
An FIR No. 21/2025 was registered under Sections 318(2) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was promptly launched.
During the investigation, police identified Mohammad Lateef Lone, son of Ali Mohammad Lone, resident of Tujan, Pulwama, as the administrator of the Facebook page that carried the fraudulent content. Another accused, Amir Yousuf Khan, son of Mohammad Yousuf Khan and a resident of Bandipora currently living in Gulab Bagh, Zakoora, was also identified. Khan had provided the bank account into which the fraudulent donations were being deposited.
Both accused have been arrested, and further investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the scam.
Meanwhile, police have issued an advisory to media personnel and the general public urging them not to share or engage with the deceptive Facebook post. Spreading such false information may contribute to further exploitation and distress for the victim’s family.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious or illegal online fundraising activities to the nearest police station
