Baramulla, Oct 18: As the wedding season approaches its end it is time to reflect on a painful reality in our society. Despite regularly attending religious sermons and Islamic gatherings, we often forget the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and authentic Hadith when it comes to weddings.
Extravagant Wazwan feasts, unnecessary customs and social competition have turned marriage into a financial burden for many ordinary families. While some spend lavishly to impress society a poor father struggles to arrange his son’s or daughter’s Nikah, sometimes taking loans or even selling ancestral property to meet social expectations.
A daughter’s marriage should be a source of happiness not a financial burden for her parents. True respect does not come from expensive ceremonies or countless dishes; it comes from humility, compassion and good character.
Our religious scholars, community leaders and elders must encourage simple marriages and discourage unnecessary expenditure. Wealthy families should celebrate according to their means without creating pressure on others. Those who can afford more should also remember the families struggling to make ends meet.
This is not a criticism of celebration but an appeal for balance humanity and responsibility. Let us replace competition with compassion and extravagance with simplicity.
May Allah guide us to practise the values we hear in religious gatherings and help us build a society where no parent fears the cost of marrying off their child. Make Nikah easy avoid extravagance and spread happiness—not financial hardship.
