79th anniversary of battle of Shalateng commemorated

November 08, 2025 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Nov 8: The Battle of Shalateng, fought on 07 November 1947, stands as a watershed moment in the annals of Indian Military history. During the first Indo-Pak War of 1947-48, this decisive engagement saw the gallant soldiers of the Indian Army, in concert with valiant local civilians, repelled the advancing Pakistani raiders and safeguarded the city of Srinagar. Their indomitable courage and sacrifice has few parallels and exposed Pak perfidy.
To commemorate the 79th Anniversary of this historic victory, a solemn and dignified event was organised by Headquarters Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo) at Shalateng Garrison on 08 November 2025. The commemoration was marked by reverence, remembrance and reflection of the legacy of valour, unity and selfless service, epitomised by the Bravehearts of Shalateng.
This year's event commenced with an Ex-Servicemen Rally, which witnessed overwhelming participation from the veterans and veer naris. The rally featured interactive sessions on life beyond military service, rehabilitation opportunities, second-career guidance and acknowledgement of contribution of ESMs towards Nation Building. Veterans of all ages shared their first-hand accounts of their battlefield experiences and other significant operations, inspiring the gathering with their courage, dedication and fortitude.
Adding festive colour to the event, students and teachers from Army Goodwill Schools of the Kashmir participated enthusiastically in a specially curated educational and heritage tour, which included a visit to the War Museum at Shalateng – a living chronicle of the region’s military history. The young participants engaged in interactive dialogues with the veterans, gaining valuable insights into the spirit of service, patriotism and Nation Building. Their reflections and expressions of gratitude underscored their enduring love for Nation as well as their aspirations to be part of rising and shining India.
The event culminated with the General Officer Commanding, Kilo Force, alongside veterans, students and teachers, jointly paying homage to the immortal heroes of the Battle of Shalateng. The Guard of Honour and the solemn notes of the bugle resonated across the garrison, evoking deep emotion and collective pride among all present. Their collective participation symbolised the resolute bond between the Armed Forces and the Kashmiri populace, fostering a spirit of solidarity, respect and National pride.
The 79th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Shalateng thus stands as a fitting tribute to the courage, resilience and unity that defines the Indian soldier. It reaffirms the shared responsibility of every citizen to uphold the ideals for which the Bravehearts of 1947 fought with valour, sacrifice and unwavering devotion to the motherland.
