Kashmir: Gulmarg gondola fare row

January 27, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Jan 27: Locals and tourists have accused the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department of overcharging at the Gulmarg Gondola, alleging that a sharp hike in fares has turned the popular attraction into an unaffordable luxury for many.

According to residents, the fare for the Gondola has been fixed at ₹1,700 for Phase I and Phase II combined. However, passengers who get down at Phase I and then proceed to Phase II are reportedly charged an additional ₹400, taking the total cost to ₹2,100.

Locals said the revised rates are a steep jump from earlier fares of around ₹800 for both phases, placing the Gondola beyond the reach of many, particularly students and local families.

Apart from pricing, residents also questioned the quality of services, claiming they do not justify the charges. “The services are virtually non-existent. This is nothing but looting,” a local said, alleging unchecked commercialisation of a public tourism asset.

They pointed out that Gulmarg is frequented not only by foreign tourists and affluent visitors but also by locals, students and domestic travellers, all of whom are now forced to pay what they described as exorbitant rates.

Locals urged authorities to review the pricing policy, introduce concessional fares for residents and students, and improve service standards at the Gondola to ensure fairness and transparency.
