Project Udaan empowers border students

July 01, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Poonch, July 1: In a remarkable initiative aimed at transforming the educational landscape of India's remote border regions, the Indian Army has launched classes under 'Project Udaan', a flagship educational programme under Operation Sadbhavana. Designed to nurture young talent and provide quality coaching to deserving students, the initiative seeks to prepare children from border areas for admission into some of the country's most prestigious military and educational institutions.

The programme was formally inaugurated at Hari Modern Public School, Poonch, in collaboration with the school administration, marking another significant milestone in the Indian Army's sustained efforts towards community development and youth empowerment in the border district. The initiative reflects the Army's belief that education remains one of the most powerful tools for nation-building and social transformation.

Recognising the immense potential of students residing in geographically isolated and economically challenged border areas, Project Udaan has been specifically designed to prepare aspirants for highly competitive entrance examinations of Sainik Schools, Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS), Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV). These premier institutions have long been recognised for producing disciplined, academically accomplished, and nationally committed citizens, making them an ideal platform for nurturing future leaders.

The journey of Project Udaan began with a transparent and merit-based selection process. An extensive OMR-based screening examination was conducted across Poonch district, attracting enthusiastic participation from students representing diverse educational and socio-economic backgrounds. Following a rigorous evaluation process, 30 highly meritorious students were selected purely on merit to undergo intensive, fully-sponsored coaching under the programme.

The coaching curriculum has been carefully structured to strengthen students' academic foundations while preparing them for competitive examinations. Qualified and experienced faculty members are providing comprehensive instruction in English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge, ensuring that students receive quality education comparable to coaching facilities available in urban centres.

A special highlight of the inauguration was the interaction of Commander, 93 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier Sachinder Joshi, with the selected students. During the interactive session, Brigadier Joshi motivated the young aspirants to pursue excellence in academics and encouraged them to develop discipline, integrity, and patriotism. He briefed the students about the importance of quality education, career opportunities in the Indian Army, the admission process and benefits of Sainik Schools, and inspired them to work hard towards achieving their dreams of serving the nation. His words of encouragement instilled confidence and enthusiasm among the students, who expressed their determination to make the best use of the opportunity provided under Project Udaan.

Beyond classroom learning, the programme incorporates regular motivational and personality development sessions aimed at enhancing self-confidence, communication skills, leadership qualities, discipline, and overall character development. These sessions seek to inspire students to dream bigger, overcome challenges, and realise their full potential despite the geographical and socio-economic limitations often associated with border regions.

The initiative has received widespread appreciation from local residents, parents, educators, and community leaders, who have hailed the Indian Army's continued commitment towards the welfare of border communities. Many have observed that access to specialised coaching for competitive institutions has traditionally remained beyond the reach of students living in remote areas due to financial constraints and limited educational infrastructure. Project Udaan bridges this gap by providing deserving students with equal opportunities to compete on a national platform.

For many participating students, the programme represents not merely a coaching initiative but a gateway to a brighter future. It offers them the confidence, guidance, and academic support necessary to pursue careers in the defence services and other prestigious fields, thereby contributing meaningfully to both their families and the nation.

Project Udaan stands as another shining example of the Indian Army's multidimensional role in border areas. While safeguarding the nation's frontiers remains its foremost responsibility, the Army has consistently worked towards promoting education, healthcare, skill development, and social welfare under Operation Sadbhavana, fostering trust and strengthening bonds with local communities.

By investing in the aspirations of young minds today, the Indian Army is helping shape tomorrow's leaders. Project Udaan is not merely an educational initiative; it is an investment in human potential, national integration, and the future of India's border regions. As these young students embark on their journey towards excellence, they carry with them the hopes of their families, the encouragement of their communities, and the unwavering support of an institution dedicated to building a stronger and more empowered nation.
