
Ganderbal, May 21: Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) today organized an awareness lecture on breast cancer under the theme “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” at Tulmulla Campus.
The programme was jointly organized by the Dean Students Welfare (DSW), Health Centre, and Health Counselling Cell in collaboration with Paras Health Srinagar with the aim of spreading awareness about breast cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and healthy lifestyle practices among students and faculty members.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir, Dean School of Legal Studies, highlighted the importance of maintaining good health and generating awareness about cancer and other serious health concerns. He appreciated the efforts of the organizers for conducting a meaningful and informative programme aimed at sensitizing students about critical healthcare issues affecting society.
Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, Registrar underlined the importance of spreading awareness regarding cancer-related diseases and urged students to actively participate in such informative sessions. He stated that educational institutions have an important role in promoting health consciousness, social responsibility, and preventive healthcare awareness among the youth.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Shabnum Bashir, Director Surgical Oncology, Center for Breast & Colorectal Cancers & Non-Cancer Disorders, in her presentation, discussed breast cancer, its stages, symptoms, causes, risk factors, preventive measures, and available treatment options. She emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, regular medical check-ups, and awareness regarding self-examination techniques for timely detection of the disease. She also deliberated upon lifestyle modifications and preventive healthcare practices that can significantly reduce the risk of cancer. The session witnessed active engagement from participants and generated awareness among the attendees regarding the importance of preventive healthcare.
Dean DSW, Dr. Jehrul Islam, appreciated the initiative taken by the university authorities in organizing such awareness programmes for the welfare and wellbeing of students.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Dr. Sheeba Nazir, Medical Officer, highlighted the importance of health awareness programmes and observed that diseases such as breast cancer require timely diagnosis, proper medical attention, and continuous public awareness to reduce associated risks and ensure better healthcare outcomes.
Dr. Rehana Shawl, Asst Prof. Deptt of Law and Youth Welfare Officer, emphasized the importance of creating a healthy, informed, and socially responsible society by encouraging students to participate in educational and awareness initiatives related to public health and wellbeing.
