Central University of Kashmir’s (CUKashmir), Student Mental Health Task Force, today observed the “World Mental Health Day 2026” by organising a one-day programme on the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” at Tulmulla campus.

Speaking on the occasion, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Shahid Rasool, highlighted the importance of acceptance, open communication and mutual trust in addressing mental health challenges, particularly within educational institutions. He observed that stigma and the reluctance to acknowledge emotional difficulties often prevent individuals from receiving timely support.

“There is first, that we don't accept it. Second, we don't share it. And third, that we don't come forward to help each other,” he said, identifying these attitudes as major barriers to collective well-being. Prof. Shahid Rasool emphasized that teachers must understand the individual needs of students and respond with patience, compassion and sensitivity rather than harshness. “No two students are alike,” he observed, advocating a caring approach that recognizes the different circumstances and emotional needs of learners. He appreciated the university's initiative to address student mental health through a dedicated task force and called for extending similar attention to research scholars, faculty members and non-teaching staff.

Addressing the gathering, Registrar, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir underscored the importance of addressing mental health as a growing concern affecting individuals and communities across boundaries. Drawing attention to the pressures created by unrealistic expectations and unfulfilled aspirations, he encouraged students to pursue a peaceful and balanced life rather than allow endless expectations to undermine their well-being. Sharing a reflection on the dangers of assumptions and social judgement, Dr. Mir emphasized that people should understand the circumstances of others before forming opinions about their behaviour. He cautioned that misconceptions could cause unnecessary distress and urged students to cultivate empathy, thoughtful understanding and a non-judgmental attitude towards others.

Chief Proctor and Dean, School of Legal Studies, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir, stressed the significance of positive thinking, contentment and a balanced outlook towards life in maintaining mental well-being. Sharing his reflections on happiness and human relationships, he observed that an individual's perception often shapes their response to challenging circumstances. “Life has two sides. You may not control everything, but it is up to you which side you will take,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of cultivating positivity while navigating life's uncertainties. Prof. Mir elaborated on his philosophy of the “four goods”, encouraging individuals to see good, feel good and do good, while working towards the greater good of all. He cautioned against allowing negativity and anger to dominate one's thoughts, observing that harboring resentment often harms the individual more than anyone else.

Dean School of Education, Prof. C Naseema, Dean DSW, Dr. Jehirul Islam, faculty members, research scholars, administrative staff and students were present.

In his address, Nodal Officer of the Student Mental Health Task Force and Dean School of Business Studies, Prof. Syed Zahoor Ahmad Geelani, observed that people were often quick to offer advice but less willing to listen patiently to those experiencing difficulties. Calling for active listening, he encouraged faculty members to ask whether students were coping well instead of responding only to attendance, deadlines and academic performance. Prof. Zahoor Geelani highlighted the challenges faced by students who travel long distances, manage family responsibilities and struggle to balance competing demands. He called for establishment of stronger counselling infrastructure, a confidential helpline, online appointment facilities and a dedicated psychological counsellor inside the varsity.

In his presentation, Clinical Psychologist, Mr. Muzaffar Ahmad, emphasized that mental health difficulties must not be dismissed as personal weaknesses, excuses or failures. He observed that misconceptions and societal judgements frequently prevent individuals from acknowledging their struggles and seeking appropriate assistance. “We as a people, don't understand what mental health is,” he observed, drawing attention to the tendency to misinterpret emotional distress as indiscipline, lack of motivation or an inability to face difficulties. He also cautioned against relying exclusively on motivational messages when individuals require professional assessment, appropriate intervention and sustained support. He urged participants to carry the message beyond the programme and help others become more aware of mental health.

Earlier in her welcome address, Sr. Asst Prof. Dr. Gulafroz Jan said the student mental health must not be treated as a peripheral welfare concern, but as an integral component of higher education. She highlighted the often-unseen emotional challenges faced by students navigating academic pressure, loneliness, family expectations and uncertainty about their future. “Not every struggle is visible, not every silence signifies peace, and not every smile tells the whole story” she observed.

Sr. Asst Prof. Deptt of Zoology, Dr. Ibraq Khursheed conducted the event proceedings and Medical Officer, Dr. Sheeba proposed the vote of thanks.

Later in the second technical session, HoD Deptt of Physical Education, Dr. Kaukab Azeem talked about “Physical Wellbeing and Mental Health and Dr. Aijaz Suhaff, consultant Psychiatrist, IMHANS, deliberated upon the programme theme.
