Srinagar, October 2: National Conference leader and Zadibal MLA Tanveer Sadiq has raised concerns over the delay in submitting a report on daily wagers in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the report, which was expected within six months, has still not reached the Chief Minister even after a year.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of a bridal lounge in Gojwara, Srinagar, Sadiq said the issue of daily wagers remains important and urged the Chief Secretary to submit the report before the end of his tenure.
“The report was supposed to be submitted within six months. Today, one year has passed, but it has still not reached the Chief Minister,” Sadiq said.
He expressed hope that the Chief Secretary would submit the report during October and that it would have a lasting impact on the concerns of daily wagers.
Sadiq also called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging that the Election Commission was being misused. He urged the Government of India to take the issue seriously.
Referring to legal protections available to members of the Election Commission, Sadiq questioned the safeguards surrounding the commission and compared the present situation with the tenure of former Chief Election Commissioner T N Seshan.
He also referred to an investigation published by The Indian Express, claiming that dissenting notes by two election officials had raised questions about the functioning of the electoral system.
On Jammu and Kashmir, Sadiq alleged that the handling of electoral rolls and the delimitation exercise had been carried out in a manner intended to benefit the BJP. He, however, said that despite these measures, the party could not win seats from Kashmir.
The remarks come amid continuing political debate over the status of daily wagers and the functioning of electoral institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
