Decision on Extension of Summer Vacation in Schools Likely by Tomorrow: Sakina Itoo

July 18, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Kulgam, July 18: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Saturday said the government is expected to take a final decision by Sunday on whether to extend the ongoing summer vacation in schools, as authorities continue to assess the prevailing weather conditions and the impact of the persistent heatwave across the Kashmir Valley.

With temperatures remaining unusually high and schools scheduled to reopen on Monday, concerns have intensified among parents and students regarding children's safety amid the prolonged spell of extreme heat. The government is reviewing the situation before deciding whether educational institutions should resume classes as planned or remain closed for a longer period.

Speaking to reporters during a horticulture programme at DK Marg in Kulgam, Itoo said the administration is closely monitoring the weather situation.

"The weather in Kashmir has changed considerably, and the intense heat is a matter of concern. The health and well-being of our students remain our top priority. A decision on whether to extend the summer vacation or reopen schools as scheduled will be taken by tomorrow," she said.

The minister added that the government is gathering feedback from the concerned departments and will make a decision after carefully evaluating the prevailing weather conditions and keeping the interests of students in mind.
