
Srinagar, Sep 27: The Economic Offences Wing of Crime Branch J&K has arrested a man who had been evading arrest for several years in connection with multiple cases involving alleged financial and land-related fraud.
The accused has been identified as Soom Nath Koul, son of Kalash Nath Koul, originally a resident of Bangalore North, Karnataka, and currently staying in Janipur, Jammu. His arrest was carried out in accordance with directions issued by the Sub-Judge, Srinagar.
According to officials, a dedicated team was formed to trace the accused and execute the court orders. After conducting sustained efforts and following the required legal procedures, the team located and arrested him in Jammu.
Officials said several Hue and Cry Notices had previously been issued to locate Koul. Investigators allege that he managed to avoid detection for years and used different identities during this period.
Five cases have been registered against him with Crime Branch Kashmir. The cases relate to allegations of cheating, forgery and fraudulent transactions involving migrant properties, including the alleged use of fake Powers of Attorney and agreements to sell. In one case, a chargesheet was filed against him in absentia under Section 512 of the CrPC.
Investigators allege that Koul approached prospective buyers for land transactions while using different names, including Soom Nath Koul, Brij Nath Bhat, Mohan Lal Dhar and Hadi Nath Dhar.
The investigation has also indicated alleged financial fraud involving crores of rupees, with the suspected involvement of other individuals. Another accused, Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar of Budgam, was arrested last week in connection with the same case.
The latest arrest is part of the ongoing investigation. The EOW is continuing its probe to determine the total financial loss, examine the land transactions and establish the involvement of other persons allegedly linked to the cases.
Authorities have urged people to remain cautious while dealing with financial and property transactions and to report suspected economic fraud to the Economic Offences Wing.
