Baramulla, April 25: Minister for Health & Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, on Saturday inaugurated a newly constructed Science Block at Government Degree College (Women) Baramulla and laid foundation stones for several key infrastructure projects in the district.

Accompanied by MLA Baramulla Javid Hassan Baig, MLA Uri Dr. Sajad Shafi, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla S.F. Hamid, Director Higher Education and other officials, the Minister said the Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to strengthening education and healthcare infrastructure while ensuring inclusive development.

Addressing a gathering at the college, Itoo emphasised that education remains the cornerstone of a progressive society. She said the new Science Block would significantly enhance academic capacity by providing modern laboratories, improved classrooms, and better learning facilities, particularly encouraging women’s participation in science education.

Highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment, the Minister described women as “torchbearers of society” and urged girl students to pursue careers of their choice. She stressed that empowering women strengthens families and communities and contributes to overall societal growth.

The Minister also condemned abusive language against women on social media, calling it unacceptable and urging constructive dialogue instead.

During the visit, she released the college’s annual magazine “SONZAL,” while Principal Prof. Neelofar Bhat presented a report on the institution.

Later, Itoo laid the foundation stone for a Drug De-addiction Centre at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, aimed at providing treatment, counselling, and rehabilitation services under the Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir initiative. She also launched work on an Autopsy/Mortuary Centre to improve medico-legal services.

In the education sector, she laid the foundation stones for an ST-PG Hostel at Government Degree College (Boys) Baramulla and a 100-bedded Girls Hostel to address accommodation needs and promote access to higher education.

Reiterating the government’s focus on timely completion, the Minister said these projects will enhance accessibility, improve service delivery, and contribute to equitable development across the district.
