Jammu Records Highest October Rainfall in 71 Years as Three-Hour Downpour Triggers Flooding

October 12, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Jammu, Oct 12: Jammu witnessed record-breaking rainfall on Sunday, resulting in one death and a woman going missing in separate flood-related incidents. The downpour triggered flash floods, waterlogging and landslides, damaging vehicles and inundating residential and commercial buildings across several areas.

According to officials cited in media reports, the city received 185.6 mm of rainfall within three hours, exceeding the previous October record of 160 mm recorded in 1955. The rainfall began around 8:30 am, severely disrupting normal life as roads were submerged and rainwater entered homes and shops.

In Raipur Domana, a 27-year-old woman went missing after being swept away by floodwaters while reportedly trying to help her husband, who had gone to move their parked car. The man managed to escape. Police personnel, local residents and State Disaster Response Force teams launched a search operation to trace the missing woman.

In another incident, the body of a man suspected to have drowned in a flooded stream was recovered from the Domana area on Sunday evening. His identity and the circumstances surrounding his death were yet to be confirmed in the available reports.

The intense rainfall also triggered landslides along the Panjtirthi-Sidrah and Sidrah-Nagrota stretches, disrupting traffic on important routes. Personnel and machinery were deployed to remove debris and facilitate the restoration of traffic movement.

Several localities, including Panjtirthi, Nagrota, Roop Nagar, Janipur, Dogra Chowk, Durga Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Raipur Domana, experienced waterlogging and inundation, affecting residents and businesses.

The incident has renewed concerns over urban drainage and flood-management systems, as the exceptional rainfall exposed the vulnerability of several neighbourhoods to sudden flooding and highlighted the challenges of maintaining transport and essential services during extreme weather events.
