J&K Medical Interns Resume Strike Over Stipend Revision, Allege Repeated Delays by Govt

October 20, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, October 20: Medical interns across Jammu and Kashmir have resumed their strike over the pending revision of stipends, with the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) announcing candle marches at government medical colleges and SKIMS Medical College, Bemina, on Tuesday evening.

The renewed protest comes after weeks of waiting for a decision on the stipend hike. AIMSA said the government had provided a written assurance on September 8 and asked the interns to wait for 30 days. However, the stipulated period expired without the issuance of an implementation order, the association said.

According to AIMSA, its delegation met Officer on Special Duty Peerzada Zahoor Ahmad on October 12, when the representatives were asked to allow another week for the matter to be resolved. A subsequent meeting with the Director General of Finance at the Civil Secretariat on October 19 also failed to yield a final decision.

The association has also raised concerns over the alleged conduct of an official during discussions on the issue. Dr Tasaduk, joint secretary of AIMSA, alleged that the OSD made humiliating remarks, suggesting that the government was doing medical interns a favour by providing them with free medical education.

Rejecting the reported remarks, AIMSA said publicly funded education is supported by taxpayers and should not be cited to undermine the legitimate demands of medical interns. The association maintained that its members deserve respectful treatment while raising concerns about their stipend and working conditions.

AIMSA president Dr Mohammad Momin Khan said the interns had exercised patience, attended multiple meetings and relied on repeated assurances from the authorities. However, the continued absence of a formal decision has weakened their confidence in the resolution process, he said.

The association reiterated that it respects government institutions and officials but expects medical interns to be treated with dignity. It urged the government to issue the stipend revision order without further delay if the relevant file has completed the required formalities.

The candle marches are part of the association’s renewed campaign to press for an early resolution of the long-pending demand.
